BonVision and latest Bonsai incompatibility?

Hi - this might be a question for Aman, but thought I'd try here first:

We tried updating Bonsai today from 2.7.2 to 2.8.5, and we found a bug in BonVision:
We specify a series of stimuli with GratingsSpecification, which goes into a CreateGratingTrial

CreateGratingTrial has default parameter values (which must be filled in to run the workflow), but these used to be overwritten with the parameters in GratingsSpecification. In the new Bonsai version, the default values in CreateGratingTrial overwrite the input parameters from GratingsSpecification.

So for example, if we have GratingSpecification give 2 stimuli at [X = -90, X = 90], and the default value in CreateGratingTrial is X = 0, CreateGratingTrial outputs two stimuli of [X = 0, X = 0].

Does BonVision need updating to work with the newest Bonsai, or is something else going on? I'd also be wary of other bugs, and this is just the only one we've seen so far.

I noted this issue and raised a bug report on it on the BonVision GitHub bonvision/BonVision#31, but yea I think there is something different in how those node are being processed in the latest versions of Bonsai (>2.8). My suggestion would be to keep using an older version of Bonsai in a local environment for your BonVision workflows or avoid using the GratingSpecification or CreateGratingTrial node until this gets fixed. You can download previous releases of Bonsai from here (the *.zip is the portable version).

edit: the bug has now been isolated and goncalo has in-depth explanation of it in the linked issue, use the workarounds detailed here for now for BonVision workflows still using these nodes, closing this topic as answered.
