Dear Copilot team,

The Copilot is great computer aided programming tool.
So far I have tried it with VS Code. It is nice playground to evaluate Copilot performance.
However I use eclipse CDT for production firmware programming purposes.
Eclipse CDT is still miles ahead of VS code in many respects when it comes to development of embedded projects.

The attempt has been made by @masecla22 recently to fill this gap: /~https://github.com/masecla22/eclipse-github-copilot-integration
Unfortunately the plugin has never reached the maturity to be useful.

Unfortunately I ran out of time for this project, and I don't have enough knowledge at the moment. I might come back to this, however, the entire functionality is "technically" implemented. IntelliJ and Eclipse are quite similar, and I'm somewhat confident that for each IntelliJ method there is an Eclipse counter part. Which is why, technically, simply swapping all components out would result in a functional plugin.

As for how hard that is to do, I cannot say.

If Intellij and Eclipse are indeed so similar, then it should not be a huge effort to support eclipse as well.

@vgcpge - it may be worth adding a 404 handler, or static page like Eclipse's download server has. See https://download.eclipse.org/tools/cdt/releases/latest/ for an example.

We'd like to work with GitHub to make our plugin the "official" one and are quite flexible on how we could do that. I know a lot of GitHub employees monitor this discussion so if y'all could help with visibility or make an introduction to the right contact (@scottdensmore or other?) we'd really appreciate it. Obviously, it would be incredible for the Eclipse community while providing Copilot with full coverage for all the popular IDEs. Thanks in advance.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm a co-founder of Genuitec and Copilot4Eclipse is our product, so yeah, I think it's awesome. Additionally, Copilot4Eclipse currently generates revenue for GitHub, through Copilot subscriptions and usage, and nothing but losses for us, due to the development costs and lack of any revenue stream. This relationship is not indefinitely sustainable.

While I have your attention, I'll go "all in" on the marketing and note that we also created other free / freemium plug-ins to cover gaping holes in Eclipse that you'll probably enjoy:

Darkest Dark Theme with DevStyle: Because Eclipse needs a face lift with a perfect dark theme (and light themes and modern icons too).

Codetogether Live Because Eclipse needs a world-class way to collaborate remotely (like Live Share but without the mandatory account requirements). Oh, and it's the only one that works between all the IDEs your team uses or from a browser and can be fully hosted behind your firewall.

Yes, it's definitely possible as the API is public. But it requires someone who's motivated and possesses the required technical skills.

Thank you for the reference, Todd! I’m still a bit confused. This thread is about making GitHub Copilot available in Eclipse. Your reference is for the APIs at https://www.copilot.com/, which is a third-party company not related to GitHub Copilot, as they explicitly stated:

I believe this plugin could be a great starting point for an official version.

By their actions (and inactions), Microsoft and GitHub have shown that they're at best uninterested in Eclipse.

On the other hand, Genuitec helped to create the Eclipse Foundation and has been building a portfolio of professional Eclipse development tools for over 20 years.

Given our pedigree, I'll assert that Genuitec's deep roots in the Eclipse community make Copilot4Eclipse the official plugin for our community.

I can certainly understand that sentiment since Eclipse remains very popular and I originally felt the same way.

But seeing what it takes to create a first-class integration like Copilot4Eclipse has caused me to consider an explanation that might explain GitHub's inaction.

And that is simply the issue of opportunity cost. Simply stated, if they spend resources creating and maintaining an Eclipse integration, what are they not doing with those resources instead?

Perhaps the incremental revenue they'd make on Eclipse isn't what they'd make by using those resources to improve their models, or integrate new ones, for example.

I have to admit in hindsight that it's been a brilliant play to ignore Eclipse. GitHub did nothing and Genuitec stepped in and built their Copilot integration plugin at no cost to them. Even better, we've opened up a completely new IDE family as a subscription revenue stream for them so it's 100% pure profit.

At this point they're continuing to ignore Eclipse simply because it's their smartest move for their business; they get everything they want without doing anything.

Kudos to their business acumen.

I also tried to install it. It worked for me.
But it seems to not supporting ABAP .
JAVA is working in eclipse but when opening ADT files I receive this error message - and no code completion:

java.runtime.name=OpenJDK Runtime Environment
java.runtime.version=21.0.3+9-LTS

Disabling sttrict SSL help to get rid o my initial problem, now second appeared. With Java editor.

For ABAP language I have same issue like @mintert91. Copilot4Eclipse works here without issues.

Thanks for the feedback. Could you please let me know if the dialogue appears multiple times when Eclipse starts up, or does it occur every time you type a character on the keyboard?
