@amatiash Sorry for the trouble here, Could you provide a few more details on how this can be replicated? What version of the extension are you using?

I use version 1.1.37.2188.
At the moment I don't know what causes the log out. So I don't know the steps to reproduce it. I'm just using it and it logs out.

Is there kind of idle timeout? Does it log out if you are inactive for a certain time?

I watched at events that trigger logout and it happens frequently when I undo/redo. Once I saw Copilot instantly logged out when I logged in.

Ok, thanks! I've wrote above that logout happens on undo/redo. I've watched copilot status for a long time and I it just logs out for any reason on a random basis. I can't reproduce the cause.

I have this problem too, in Webstorm and intelliJ, after a couple hours, it randomly just starts spinning and need to click log in again and again. I have not found a way to reproduce it, except just using the IDE for a couple hours

Im getting issues, mostly after I switch from one project to another. It says I need to log in to GitHub, I click login, it says its getting device code for a while, then says im logged in but doesn't work, so I go to tools -> GitHub co pilot -> logout, restart, login and then it works. Happens quite regularly and I'm often jumping between projects, so its very irritating.

Mine logs me out every couple minutes in all JetBrains IDEs I use. I don't know the cause, and there are no errors in IDEA logs with the #copilot tag, only info messages. I can just click the spinner in the status bar and instantly log in again, but it's still frustrating. Plugin version: 1.1.38.2229

The issue has been happening for months for me, possibly since Copilot got released, so I don't know if it's related to that post. Would it be possible to add logs to wherever the plugin decides that I'm logged out and show the spinner, and log the reason why Copilot did that?

No, because I have no idea. I just work, then I notice that copilot is logged out again, and there's nothing in IDEA logs to suggest why or even when it happened.

I posted my comment on Jan 8, after finding this thread that seemed to describe the issue I've been having for a long time.

The rate limiting apparently started in the evening of Jan 11, those are the only logs from the past month that say #copilot - [ERROR], and those only started happening after my first two comments in this thread.

In my case, I found the following error in my log.

I think it need a better message rather than just logout the plug in completely.

The latest update from my side with plugin version 1.1.38.2229 and WebStorm 2022.3.1, macOS 10.15.7. Payed Copilot version.

Copilot will logout when you are idle and will show a spinner.
Once you start typing it will login in automatically and show suggestions.

I'd assume that showing a spinner is confusing and should be changed to a different display state.

There is might be no bug, but state display misconception.
Suggest to change from "spinner state" to "stand by state".

Though, there is a strange behavior reported by other users, might be good to check.
But I have none at the moment.

Hi, I've been using Copilot since the first beta, and this issue has been bugging me ever since, it's still happening today.

I am in IntelliJ Idea.

To be clear, here's what I'm seeing, constantly (by that I mean at least 20-50 times a day?):

and clicking on it show this:

Clicking on "Login to GitHub" makes the spinner go away... But it inevitably comes back after a while.

Just to be clear, the plugin works well apart from that UI annoyance.

• if it is really "logging out", then the bug is that it does, and should be fixed
• if it is not really logging out, and the spinner represents something else (what, I'm not sure?), then it is the wrong UI and no spinner should be shown here at all.

As you can imagine, having an animation in your peripheral vision at almost all times is very distracting and annoying.

Please prioritize this? 🙏

I have the same issue with PHPStorm 2022.3.3. I notice suggestions stop coming up, then notice the spinner, then log in and everything works OK again. Possibly it happens as mentioned above when I'm idle for a while, but it should log back in automatically and it doesn't. It just shows the perpetual loading spinner until I log in manually by clicking the button

Im getting this same problem on webstorm phpstorm and rubymine and it drives me mad.

It seems to only happen for me after closing one of the IDEs. Sometimes its fine and it persists the login, other times it looks like its logged in but it isnt and you have to go through a series of loggin in / logging out / restart IDE until eventually it connects.

Its extremely frustrating as I pretty much use all 3 IDEs on a daily basis and have to go through this pain on each one every day.

Same issue for me. The only "fix" I found is to uninstall and reinstall the plugin. But obviously, it's not conceivable to do that every time the IDE is closed and reopened, so I'm kind of not using Copilot anymore... :/

same issue here, copilot continue logout in Intellij, and told me copilot is encountering temporary issues...
When I reinstall it, it will recover for only one completion.

This has been happening for me for over a year, but recently its become much more of a problem and completions seem to function very rarely. I used to use them all the time, but now I can't even use them / rely on them to do their part. Might have to switch to using Jetbrains AI tool

I will note, that when i go into the sidebar for Github Copilot and click the refresh list directly on the completions tab, it shows the message "Retrieving Completions..." and it promptly logs me out of copilot, and never resolves the completions

Unfortunately, integration of Copilot in IntelliJ Idea suck :( ... I ended up paying for both JetBrains AI Assistant and Copilot as well. The autocompletion in Copilot is still much better than theirs. I was hoping there would be an update to the Copilot plugin that would make it on par with VS Code one, but it's still just the basic level of integration as it was a year ago. Even copy & paste from the chat doesn't work well :(

I've been working for about an hour now. I've had to click the spinny thing 5 times just to log copilot back into github. It's supposed to save me time and with all the other plugins out there now I'm starting to think this might not be worth the trouble anymore. I want to support the product but this is such a basic issue and it's been a problem for as long as I've been using it.

09-17-24 - Please, fix this issue. This thread started on Dec 06 2022. This is over 2 years of developers having to deal with this multiple times every... single... day. I've cancelled my subscription. If it gets fixed by the time next my next bill comes due I'll re-enable and give you all monies again. If not it's fine at this point. There are alternatives.
