Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open settings.json and a source file side by side.
  2. Change C_Cpp.enhancedColorization to Enable then to Disable. Side by side sync works.
  3. Change C_Cpp.enhancedColorization to Enable after it was disabled. Side by side sync does not work. May have to edit/save the file or reopen file to apply changes.

Is this a text-mate or VS Code bug?

Doing a "Restart IntelliSense For Active File" fixes it or doing a Save and switching docs causes it to refresh the IntelliSense semantic colorization. Seems like a bug to me (with our handling of the settings change), but low priority.
