Deeplinking to headings via unique names

I am trying to link to headings in another file from a markdown.

The other file has several headings such as

# Topics

## Maya

### Culture
blah blah

## Northern European

### Culture
blah blah

I need to link to the Culture headings but there are multiple headings with the same name so I thought I should specify unique ids for each. I understand, there is the

1. html method, use <h3 id="maya-culture">Culture</h3> approach. I have tried this and see that page Table of contents simply ignored all h3 headers in this case.
2. the heading id method, from the extended markdown spec, which I understand not supported in mkdocs.

Any suggestions?

P.S. just tried with <h3 markdown id="maya-culture"> , with no luck. I build the docs with mkdocs.commands.build in a python script, do I need to use md_in_html, if so how?

Solved, all I needed was the attr_list markdown-extension fo enable heading ids.
