In 'edit person' view, gallery tab, some ideas

Add a toggle switch to turn on/off showing media item in family tree view. If my only media objects attached to a person are documents, I'd rather not have anything show up in family tree view.

Make some way to checkbox or otherwise indicate which media object should show in family tree view. I'd prefer my media objects to sit in chronological order in the gallery, however I don't want a document showing in the family tree view.

I'm sceptical about that because in my opinion it is a bad practice to attach media objects directly to the person - they should be attached to citations or sources associated with the person. Of course, it's great that Gramps gives the freedom to every user to handle things in different ways, but I don't think it's worth the effort including & maintining features that disable intended behaviour. Moreover, also Gramps desktop will use these media objects in the tree view, so we are consistent.

I completely understand wanting to keep behavior between platforms consistent. I hadn't considered that. I will try to in the future before submitting 😛

😂 each time you talk to me I feel like I'm doing stuff wrong. You prompted me to go do some reading about media objects.

Just to be clear, I'm not adding like a whole census or book to each person. The "documents" I'm referring to are things like birth/death certificates, a single census sheet, a draft registration card, etc that are person-specific. Even then, though, I suppose from the perspective of a single person researching, you may not care to have these things visible each time you view a person's gallery. Maybe a list of citations is sufficient for this use case.

I have about 20 users so far with guest-only access that were interested to go see what I was working on. From the perspective of these people that may be logging in to learn about ancestors, I think having all the information easily viewable and accessible/clickable from a single "person page" helps increase usability of the website. And then if they are interested in sources (which, let's be honest, most casual viewers won't be), they can click away to go look at sources. So while it may not be "best practice", I appreciate the flexibility of the platform in allowing me to do what makes sense to me.

I'm not trying to argue or pick a fight here or anything, just trying to show how I'm using your project. I can't be the only one only using gramps web.

I guess my point with the whole post was just to try to give a different usability perspective that may not jive with the established gramps ecosystem or workflow. That said, Gramps desktop looks like it's been around since at least the 90s. I'm not naive enough to expect to turn around a train with that much steam.

If I'm using media objects incorrectly then that's on me. If this idea doesn't fit, it doesn't fit... it's all good man. I'm just writing things here that I notice as I'm working on my tree that I feel would improve my experience. If they don't/wouldn't work for other users then just discard them. I'm relatively new here, remember.

My point here was that people like pictures, but most casual viewers won't be interested in fact checking things as they are written 🤷‍♂️

If you have a citation with a picture, that will be shown as a small thumbnail next to the citation under the "sources" tab. Do I understand correctly you are implying this should be more visible?

I will need to explore that. I don't have any citations with pictures. Rather, my pictures have citations.

Interesting. My recommendation would be:

For a photograph of your ancestor, store it as a media object on the person. Optionally, add a citation to it to document where it came from (scanned from aunt Mary's photo album, ...)

For your ancestor's birth certificate, create a source and associate the picture/scan with the source. Add a citation from the person to the source.

My point with the original post was to change the behavior of the 'gallery' tab. Right now the picture posted to the card of each person in the family tree view is the first picture in the gallery. I was suggesting to allow some way for us to indicate which picture should be showb, instead of default to the first picture. That way we can order the media objects/pictures as we see fit and still show the picture we want in tree view. And, secondly, an option to turn on/off showing any pictures to the tree view. Because if my only pictures are documents or papers those are kind of ugly on the tree view. But now I understand I shouldn't be having documents there in the first place. However I do have one person whose only media object is a video and the first frame of that video is black. So it's just a black circle on his card in the tree. So 🤷‍♂️ would be convenient to be able to disable media showing up for him.
