Source XHR response to be an non-array, eg. JSON object

Does autocomplete source has to return an array of tags to be displayed in the auto complete dropdown.
I would like it to able to handle objects of arrays where each object has the tag name and a tag_id or any other data.
I could not find a solution to this by now. Is there any?
It seems some callbacks for processing data after remote responses or local findings would be helpful. Separately a fields object as an option to tag-it for the fields in the findings, whetehr remote or local, to be displayed would also be helpful in that
