Today the randomizer sets your starting oxygen capacity, fuel capacity and boost duration to 50% of their vanilla values, and provides useful items to upgrade these stats to their vanilla values and then above vanilla.

These items are useful, not progression, because they are never referenced in logic. However, there are many ways to go out of logic using >100% jetpack boost. There are also locations that can't be reached the normal way with <50% boost. So many have suggested incorporating this into the logic somehow.

I have not done this myself because:

  • When I did investigate this idea, I found that extremely few locations would be affected in practice
  • The few locations that would be affected (particularly the climb to BH's Southern Observatory) are already a known gotcha for first-time players who don't know how to use their jetpack boost optimally
  • I don't find Outer Wilds nearly as fun to play without a jetpack (this is also why I don't play suitless), or with a jetpack below 50/50/50

I did add to the mod several client-side settings for customizing the oxygen/fuel/boost starting stats and upgrade values, specifically so players could investigate these ideas if they wanted to. It's also possible that the value of this is changed by DLC and story mods. So far, no one's come to me with a concrete proposal for how to make "jetpack logic" a thing. But this is another feature idea where I'd probably merge any well thought-out proposal and implementation as long as it was off by default / opt-in.
